Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Licensed/Registered Nurse, the Medication Aide assists with patient care throughout nursing areas providing such services as collecting blood samples and other specimens, administering medication, transporting patients, and EKG monitoring. The Medication Aide will may also serve as a patient observer/sitter. The Medication Aide provides clerical and receptionist support for the functions of a specific patient care unit according to the hospital policy, the hospital mission statement, and the philosophy of the Department of Nursing.

Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION

 

High school graduate or equivalent; relevant experience in lieu of High School Diploma/GED education will be considered.

 

MINMUM WORK EXPERIENCE

 

A minimum of one years' experience as a medication aide; two year's preferred.

 

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

 

Current certification as a Medication Aide throug hthe Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES

 

Knowledge of basic clinical skills to deliver direct patient care to an individual or group of patients. Proficient with data entry/computer skills. Competent in EKG monitoring and performing venipunctures. Comfortable administering medication, reporting changes, collecting samples and recording medication dosages. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Good understanding of medical and pharmacological terminology.
